New Jersey Clinical Rotations for IMGs: Hospitals, Specialties & LORs

New Jersey is, quietly, the deepest state on our entire roster. Five active rotations span four specialties, and several come with the kind of mentor credentials (a former Program Director, a Hackensack faculty appointment, a Department Head) that carry real weight in an ERAS application. If you are building a multi-specialty USCE portfolio without leaving one metro area, New Jersey is worth a close look.

General Surgery with a Former Program Director

The Englewood General Surgery rotation, affiliated with Bergen New Bridge Medical Center and Hudson Regional Hospital, is led by a former Program Director and current Hackensack residency faculty member with over 20 years of surgical experience. The week is structured deliberately: clinic days early in the week, student-led didactics midweek, physician-led discussions on Fridays, and surgical procedures at a modern outpatient center throughout, with OR observation opportunities. At $1,996, it is also one of the least expensive General Surgery placements on our entire roster relative to the seniority of the mentor.

Psychiatry with a Department Head

At Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital in Wayne, you rotate one-on-one (max 1 student) with the hospital's Department Head, who has extensive experience in adult psychiatry with a subspecialty in geriatric psychiatry and substance use disorders. The commitment is real (a minimum of 3 days and 30 hours per week in the outpatient clinic), but so is the access. It runs $3,400.

Two Pediatrics Rotations, Different Intensities

St. Joseph University Medical Center in Clifton pairs you one-on-one with residency program faculty for at least 30 hours per week of outpatient pediatric exposure, with limited inpatient experience possible at the preceptor's discretion. At $3,500, it is priced for that one-on-one residency-faculty access.

The Jersey City rotation, with a board-certified Medical Director, is higher-volume and more clinic-paced: a standard 8:30am–4:30pm schedule (extended to 7pm on Wednesdays) with regular literature discussions built into the week, and a path toward taking histories independently after the first week. At $2,000, it is the more budget-friendly of the two pediatrics options.

Family Medicine Across Three Care Settings

The Englewood Hospital Family Medicine rotation is led by the hospital's Chief of Family Practice, who is board-certified not just in Family Medicine but also Geriatric Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. That breadth shows up in the rotation itself: you will spend time across an outpatient clinic, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes, a genuinely unusual mix of care settings for a single 4-week rotation, at $1,996.

What Every New Jersey Rotation Includes

  • A personalized letter of recommendation on hospital or clinic letterhead
  • A $500 deposit applied toward your total balance, due before your start date
  • Standard required documents: updated CV, AAMC standardized immunization records, and your medical school transcript or ID

How to Choose Between Them

If credential weight on your LOR matters most, the Englewood Surgery rotation (former PD, Hackensack faculty) and the Ramapo Ridge Psychiatry rotation (Department Head) are the standouts. If you want maximum one-on-one time, look at the two max-1-student options: Ramapo Ridge and St. Joseph Pediatrics. If you are working with a tighter budget, both Family Medicine and Surgery in Englewood sit at $1,996, among the lowest prices across our entire roster.
