Clinical Rotations in New York for International Medical Graduates

New York carries obvious weight on a residency application: it is home to some of the country's most recognized teaching hospitals, and "trained in New York" reads well regardless of the specialty you are pursuing. USMLE Wise currently offers two placements in the state, and they are aimed at fairly different students.

Internal Medicine with Housing Included, Near the Hudson Valley

The Elective in New York at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital's affiliated campus in Newburgh is a 4-week combined inpatient and outpatient Internal Medicine experience, and one of the few rotations on our entire roster where housing is included in the price. You get dorm accommodation close to the hospital, occasional meals and pickup/drop-off support from the mentor, and a genuinely IMG-friendly environment: this hospital has a residency program, and past rotators through this exact placement have gone on to match. At $4,150 (rotation plus housing), capped at 2 students, it is priced as a complete package rather than tuition alone.

Family Medicine in the Heart of NYC

The Family Medicine rotation is run by a board-certified physician who also serves as a Visiting Attending Physician with Mount Sinai Hospital. You will split time across two outpatient clinics in New York City, seeing the full spectrum of primary care in a high-volume, diverse patient population, on a standard Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm schedule. It runs $2,900, capped at 2 students, and the resulting letter of recommendation carries the added weight of the Mount Sinai affiliation.

What Both New York Rotations Include

  • A personalized letter of recommendation on hospital or clinic letterhead
  • A $500 deposit applied toward your total balance, due before your start date
  • Standard required documents: updated CV, AAMC standardized immunization records, and your medical school transcript or ID

How to Choose Between Them

If you are set on Internal Medicine and want an inpatient-heavy experience with housing logistics already solved, Newburgh is the more complete package, and the fact that prior rotators have matched through this exact site is worth weighing heavily. If Family Medicine or primary care is your track and you want the credibility of a Mount Sinai-affiliated letter, or simply want to train in Manhattan itself, the NYC clinic rotation is the better fit.
