General Surgery Rotations in Florida: ACGME-Accredited Clinical Exposure in Miami
Florida offers two General Surgery rotations, but one detail sets the Miami placement apart from every other rotation we offer: it takes place at an ACGME-accredited site. For a specialty as competitive as General Surgery, that accreditation is worth understanding in detail before you decide where to train.
Florida General Surgery Rotations at a Glance
| Rotation | City | Setting | Max Students | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Larkin Community Hospital | Miami | Inpatient + Surgical Centers | 2 | $3,400 |
| Kissimmee | Kissimmee | Clinic + Surgical Procedures | 2 | $3,200 |
Why ACGME Accreditation Matters
ACGME (the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accreditation is the standard that governs US residency programs themselves. Training at an ACGME-accredited site means you are learning inside the same institutional framework your future residency will run under, not adjacent to it. At Larkin Community Hospital, with rounds also taking place at Hialeah Hospital, you round alongside Caribbean medical students who are themselves enrolled in accredited programs, inside a genuinely competitive clinical environment. That combination of accreditation and peer competition is difficult to find at a community clinic rotation.
What the Miami Rotation Looks Like
The 4-week placement spans both inpatient settings and surgical centers, with real OR observation built in. You will work directly with a General Surgeon affiliated with both hospitals, capped at 2 students, at $3,400. Beyond the clinical exposure itself, the networking opportunities at an ACGME-accredited program are a genuine advantage when it comes time to apply: attendings and residents you meet during this rotation are part of the same accredited pipeline you are trying to enter.
A Second Florida Option: Kissimmee
If your priority is a steadier, more predictable clinic pace rather than a teaching-hospital environment, the Kissimmee rotation runs a standard Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm schedule, with pre- and post-operative evaluations, wound care, and suturing practice, plus OR observation. It is not ACGME-accredited, but it offers more consistent one-on-one time with a single surgeon, at a slightly lower price point of $3,200.
What Both Rotations Include
- A personalized letter of recommendation on hospital or clinic letterhead
- A $500 deposit applied toward your total balance, due before your start date
- Standard required documents: updated CV, AAMC standardized immunization records, and your medical school transcript or ID
How to Choose
If accreditation and networking access matter most for your General Surgery application, Miami is the clear choice. If you want steadier, more individualized clinic time and are less focused on the ACGME distinction, Kissimmee is worth a look. Both are strong options, and both are covered in more detail in our full General Surgery Rotations for IMGs guide and our Florida state guide.
