Psychiatry Rotations in New Jersey: One-on-One Mentorship with a Department Head
If you are searching for a psychiatry rotation in New Jersey, here is what is currently available: a single, deliberately small placement at Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital in Wayne, capped at one student per rotation cycle. That cap is the point. Instead of splitting a preceptor's attention across a group, you get sustained, one-on-one time with the hospital's Department Head.

What Makes One-on-One Mentorship Different
Most outpatient psychiatry rotations run with 2 or 3 students rotating through the same preceptor's clinic day. At Ramapo Ridge, you are the only one there. Every case you see, every history you take, and every discussion of a treatment plan happens directly between you and the Department Head, with no split attention. For a specialty where interviewing skill and clinical judgment are hard to demonstrate on paper, that kind of direct observation over 30-plus hours a week gives your preceptor far more to write about when it comes time for your letter of recommendation.
Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry, with Substance Use Exposure
The preceptor's subspecialty focus means you are not just seeing generic outpatient psychiatric cases. Expect meaningful exposure to geriatric psychiatry (cognitive decline, polypharmacy, late-life mood disorders) alongside substance use disorders, which is a combination you will not find at most general outpatient placements. If your specialty interest already leans toward adult or geriatric psychiatry specifically, this is the most targeted training on our roster for it.
Who This Rotation Is For
This placement suits a student who wants depth over breadth: fewer cases seen alongside classmates, more sustained access to one experienced physician, and a real time commitment (30 hours a week, minimum 3 days) rather than a lighter schedule. If you are earlier in your specialty exploration and want broader exposure across multiple psychiatric subspecialties instead, our UNC Chapel Hill rotation or Houston rotation may fit better.
What's Included
- A personalized letter of recommendation on clinic letterhead
- A $500 deposit applied toward your total balance, due before your start date
- Standard required documents: updated CV, AAMC standardized immunization records, and your medical school transcript or ID
