Family Medicine Rotations in Florida: Inpatient, Outpatient & Telemedicine Training

Family Medicine training is usually clinic-bound. Our two Florida placements break that pattern, mixing inpatient hospital rounding into a specialty that most IMGs only ever experience in an outpatient setting. If you want your Family Medicine application to show hospital-based experience alongside clinic time, Florida is where to look.

Larkin Community Hospital: The Full Spread

The Larkin Community Hospital rotation in Hialeah is run by the Family Medicine Program Director himself, and it is structured across three distinct components each week. Outpatient site visits happen 2 to 3 times a week, from 6:30am to around noon, where you practice writing notes, interpreting labs, and performing physical exams. Inpatient time follows a flexible-start model (6:30am, 1pm, or 7pm), seeing 1 to 3 patients per day in 6-hour blocks with full EMR access. And online didactic sessions run every Thursday from 4 to 5pm and Friday from noon to 5pm, deepening your clinical reasoning between clinical blocks. At $4,196, it accommodates up to 6 students and is the most structured, classroom-adjacent rotation on our entire roster.

Keralty Hospital: A Leaner Inpatient-Outpatient Mix

The Keralty Hospital rotation in Miami combines inpatient experience working alongside residents and faculty with outpatient clinic exposure, plus full EMR access throughout. Two conditions apply: USMLE Step 1 must be completed before you enroll, and documents are due 28 days before your start date. The letter of recommendation is also performance-based rather than guaranteed, if you round well, you earn it, along with a potential interview opportunity. At $3,800, capped at 2 students, rotations start on the first Monday of each month.

What Both Rotations Include

  • A personalized letter of recommendation on hospital letterhead (conditional on performance at Keralty)
  • A $500 deposit applied toward your total balance, due before your start date
  • Standard required documents: updated CV, AAMC standardized immunization records, and your medical school transcript or ID (plus a USMLE Step 1 score report for Keralty)

How to Choose

If you want the most complete training experience, including formal didactics and telemedicine, Larkin is the more comprehensive option. If you have already passed Step 1 and want a leaner, more direct inpatient-outpatient mix with residents and faculty, Keralty is worth the earlier planning it requires. Both are covered further in our Family Medicine Rotations for IMGs guide and our Florida state guide.
