IMGs From Egypt: Schools, Test Centers and Visa Notes

What Egyptian graduates should check before ECFMG Certification: school eligibility, NAQAAE and WFME status, USMLE testing, documents and US visas.

Key facts

  • NRMP does not publish Match results by country of medical school. A published study of ECFMG applicant records counted 4,181 Egyptian citizens among applicants from 2009 to 2018.
  • The WFME list shows Egypt's National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE) with recognition status until April 2029.
  • Egypt is not on the country lists in Proclamation 10998 (effective January 2026), but visa processing rules for all nationalities have tightened since 2025.
  • We could not verify Egyptian Prometric centers from an official page. Check Prometric early.

Egyptian graduates are a recurring group among IMG applicants to US residency, but US official data does not break results out by country. This guide explains what we could verify about numbers, school eligibility, USMLE testing, documents and the visa process, and where we could not confirm details. It is about graduates of schools in Egypt; your school's location, not your citizenship, drives most of the rules.

What the data does and does not say #

NRMP defines IMGs by school location and reports "non-U.S. IMGs" as one group. Its 2026 Main Residency Match report says 16,154 active applicants were IMGs (U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen combined), with no country breakdown.

A JAMA Network Open study that linked ECFMG applicant records to the AMA Physician Masterfile reported 4,181 ECFMG applicants who were Egyptian citizens from 2009 to 2018, counted by citizenship at entry to medical school. That is a decade of applicants, not Match outcomes, and not a count by school location. ECFMG's own tables were not accessible to us, so we give no current annual figure. See IMG match statistics for how to read the national numbers.

Checking your school's eligibility #

  1. Search your school in the World Directory and read the ECFMG Sponsor Note for the graduation years covered. See the World Directory guide.
  2. Understand that ECFMG requires accreditation by a WFME-recognized agency for your graduation year. See the accreditation requirement.
  3. Know the national bodies. Egypt's university medical faculties operate under the Supreme Council of Universities, according to published research, and national accreditation is run by the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE). The WFME Recognition Programme list we read shows NAQAAE with recognition status until April 2029.

NAQAAE's recognition is a statement about the agency. It does not tell you whether your own faculty was accredited, or accredited in your graduation year. That is what the Sponsor Note answers. Ask your faculty for written confirmation of its accreditation dates as well.

USMLE testing #

Since January 2026 IMGs register for the USMLE through FSMB, while ECFMG decides eligibility for ECFMG Certification (announcement). USMLE says Step 1 and Step 2 CK are offered at Prometric centers worldwide, and Step 3 only in the US and its territories.

Unofficial lists name Egyptian cities, but we could not confirm them on usmle.org or Prometric and do not repeat them. After you receive a permit, check the Prometric locator for several centers and dates, and read the test center guide. If no seat is available in your window, travel to another country may be needed. That brings visa and testing region questions, so look at B-1/B-2 for exams early.

Documents and credential verification #

ECFMG verifies your final diploma and transcript directly with the issuing school, and mailed copies from you do not replace that. Practical steps:

  • Check the ECFMG Reference Guide for the exact diploma title for your school and graduation year.
  • Match names and dates across diploma, transcript and passport. If transliteration of your name varies, resolve it before you apply.
  • Ask your faculty which office answers ECFMG requests and keep a record.
  • Documents not in English need translations that meet ECFMG's rules. Read the current Information Booklet for the requirement, and see the EPIC and verification guide and common ECFMG delays.

We found no official ECFMG note specific to Egyptian documents. Do not rely on forum advice about extra stamps or ministry certification; ask ECFMG.

The US visa process, in brief #

The usual route is an ECFMG-sponsored J-1 (Statement of Need, DS-2019, visa interview) or an employer-sponsored H-1B. See the J-1 process, J-1 versus H-1B and visa interview preparation.

Appointment waits at the US embassy in Cairo change often and are published by the State Department; we do not quote them. This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm your case with the program's international office, ECFMG or an immigration attorney.

Community and professional resources #

The Egyptian American Medical Association (EAMA) describes itself as a nonprofit group of physicians of Egyptian descent, founded in 2012, and lists mentoring and match guidance among its programs (see its site). We could not verify its specific services, so ask the association directly. Networking and mentoring groups cannot influence eligibility or placement.

What to do next #

  1. Verify your faculty and graduation year in the World Directory.
  2. Ask your faculty about verification and diploma issuance.
  3. Plan US clinical experience with the USCE guide and how to get USCE.
  4. Read the ECFMG certification overview.

Frequently asked questions

How many Egyptian graduates apply to ECFMG or match each year?

There is no current official breakdown that we could open. A peer-reviewed study of ECFMG records reported 4,181 Egyptian-citizen applicants from 2009 to 2018 (citizenship at medical school entry), and NRMP does not report by country.

Does NAQAAE accreditation satisfy ECFMG?

NAQAAE appears on the WFME list of recognized agencies, but ECFMG applies the requirement by school and graduation year. Read your school's ECFMG Sponsor Note for the years covered.

Which body supervises Egyptian medical faculties?

Published research describes Egypt's Supreme Council of Universities as supervising university medical schools, while NAQAAE handles quality assurance and accreditation. Confirm current roles on their own sites.

Can I take Step 1 or Step 2 CK in Egypt?

USMLE says these Steps are offered at Prometric centers worldwide. We could not verify the Egyptian center list from an official page, so check the Prometric locator once you have a permit.
