Key facts
- NRMP and ECFMG do not publish Match results by country of medical school in the reports we checked, so there is no reliable Bangladesh-specific match number to quote.
- As of November 2026, WFME lists Bangladesh's national accreditor (BMEAC) as applying for recognition, not as recognized.
- Eligibility is decided school by school and year by year through the ECFMG Sponsor Note in the World Directory, so check your own graduation year.
- Bangladesh is not named in the December 2025 entry-restriction proclamation (Proclamation 10998) as published.
If you graduated from a medical school in Bangladesh, the most important check is not the exam or the visa. It is whether your school and graduation year are covered by ECFMG's eligibility rules. This guide shows how to check that, what is and is not publicly known about Bangladeshi IMGs in the Match, and what to plan for testing, documents and a visa. It is general information, not legal advice.
What the published data say about IMGs from Bangladesh #
NRMP counts IMGs by citizenship, not by country of medical school. In the 2026 Main Residency Match, 4,210 U.S. citizen IMGs and 11,944 non-U.S. citizen IMGs submitted rank order lists, and 2,949 and 6,733 of them matched to a PGY-1 position (70.0 and 56.4 percent). NRMP's 2026 Charting Outcomes report for non-U.S. IMGs also groups applicants by specialty and Match status, not by country.
We found no Bangladesh-specific match figure in the NRMP reports we downloaded or in ECFMG's certification fact sheet, which reports totals only (13,431 physicians from 1,628 schools in 146 countries certified in 2024). So we do not quote one. Be wary of any site that does without naming its source and year. For how to read the numbers you do have, see IMG match statistics.
Step 1: check your school and graduation year #
ECFMG requires that your school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG Sponsor Note, and that your graduation year is among the years the note covers. Since 2024, ECFMG has also required that the school be accredited by an agency recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The full steps are in the World Directory guide and the accreditation requirement explained.
Bangladesh's situation has a feature worth understanding:
- The national regulator: the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) registers doctors. Registration is not the same thing as accreditation of a school by a WFME-recognized agency.
- The accreditor: the Bangladesh Medical Education Accreditation Council (BMEAC) was set up under a 2023 law, and The Daily Star reported that it accredited two government medical colleges for the first time. On WFME's list of agencies, BMEAC appears under agencies applying for recognition. We did not find it on the recognized list in November 2026.
- What that means for you: ECFMG's rule is about recognition by WFME. A national accreditation does not by itself satisfy it. Your Sponsor Note is the practical answer, because ECFMG applies the rule school by school and year by year.
If you are still a student, check before your final year. If the Sponsor Note does not cover your graduation year, ask ECFMG, not a third party, what your options are. See ECFMG certification overview.
USMLE testing from Bangladesh #
IMGs register for USMLE through FSMB since January 2026, and ECFMG still decides eligibility for certification. Step 1 and Step 2 CK are given at Prometric centers worldwide; Step 3 is given only in the US and its territories, per the USMLE Bulletin.
We could not verify a Bangladesh center on usmle.org or Prometric's own pages. Secondary sources mention a center in Dhaka, but those can be out of date. The reliable process is to receive your scheduling permit, then search the Prometric site for centers and dates, and have a backup in a nearby country if seats are scarce. See USMLE test centers outside the US and scheduling with Prometric. If you test abroad, a visitor visa or other entry permission for that country is your responsibility, so check it early.
Credentials and documents #
ECFMG verifies your final medical diploma and transcript directly with the school that issued them. Delays at the school are the most common cause of slow certification, so ask your registrar early, learn who signs and sends the verification, and keep your contact details current. ECFMG's Reference Guide for Medical Education Credentials states the exact diploma title it requires for your school and year; check it rather than assume your degree name matches. See EPIC credential verification and common ECFMG delays.
Some US state boards and programs also ask for registration or good standing documents from the national regulator. Ask the program or board which they want rather than collecting everything speculatively.
The US visa process for Bangladeshi nationals #
Most IMGs from Bangladesh who match need a visa to train: usually a J-1 sponsored by ECFMG, or an H-1B if the program sponsors it. The steps are in J-1 visa process and J-1 vs H-1B. Visa applicants should expect an in-person interview and review of their online presence; see visa interview preparation. Some J-1 physicians are subject to the two-year home residency rule, which affects what happens after training.
Interview wait times and any additional document requests vary by post and by month, and we could not verify current figures, so check the appointment page of the US Embassy in Dhaka.
Community and professional resources #
We did not find an official, verifiable network we can recommend. Your school's alumni office, your own faculty who trained in the US, and ECFMG's and your program's published guidance are the safest starting points. Treat unofficial groups as a source of leads, not rules.
Next steps #
- Look up your school's Sponsor Note and write down the covered graduation years.
- Ask your registrar how diploma and transcript verification works.
- Plan your exams around Prometric availability and travel, not around a center you have not confirmed.
- Only then plan US clinical experience and visa timing.

Frequently asked questions
Are graduates of Bangladeshi medical schools eligible for ECFMG Certification?
It depends on your school and graduation year. Look up your school in the World Directory and read the ECFMG Sponsor Note, which states the graduation years that meet ECFMG's requirements.
Is Bangladesh's accreditation body recognized by WFME?
When we checked WFME's list in November 2026, the Bangladesh Medical Education Accreditation Council (BMEAC) was shown as applying for recognition, not as recognized. Recheck the list, because this can change.
Can I take USMLE in Bangladesh?
Third-party sources describe a Prometric center in Dhaka, but we could not confirm it on an official page. Check the Prometric scheduling site after you receive your permit.
Is there a US entry ban on Bangladeshi nationals?
Bangladesh is not named in the text of Proclamation 10998 as published in December 2025. Rules change, so check the State Department before you pay for an interview.
