Key facts
- NRMP does not publish Match results by country of medical school. We found no official source with a current count of Filipino graduates in the Match.
- The WFME list shows the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) with recognition status until April 2033.
- The Philippines is not on the country lists in Proclamation 10998 (effective January 2026), but visa processing rules for all nationalities have tightened since 2025.
- We could not verify Philippine Prometric centers from an official page. Check Prometric early.
Filipino graduates have a long history in US medicine, but official US data does not break results out by country, so this guide focuses on the checks you can do yourself. It covers what we could verify about numbers, school eligibility, USMLE testing, documents and the visa process, and says where we could not confirm something. It is about graduates of schools in the Philippines; your school's location, not your citizenship, drives most of the rules.
What the data does and does not say #
NRMP defines IMGs by where the school is located and reports non-U.S. IMGs as one group. Its 2026 Main Residency Match report says 16,154 active applicants were IMGs (U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen combined), with no country breakdown. We found no ECFMG or NRMP table with a current count for graduates of Philippine schools that we could open (ecfmg.org returns errors to automated tools), so we give none. Note that many Filipino physicians in the US trained decades ago; current applicant numbers are not the same as the size of that workforce. See IMG match statistics.
Checking your school's eligibility #
- Search your school in the World Directory and open the ECFMG Sponsor Note. Read the graduation years it lists. See the World Directory guide.
- Understand the requirement that your school be accredited by a WFME-recognized agency for your graduation year. See the accreditation requirement.
- Know the national bodies:
| Body | Role | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Commission on Higher Education (CHED) | Regulates higher education, including medical degree programs | CHED's own site for program recognition |
| Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) | Handles professional licensure | PRC's own site for licensure rules |
| Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) | Private accrediting association | WFME list: recognition status until April 2033 |
We confirmed PAASCU's status on the WFME Recognition Programme page and that CHED and PRC exist as national bodies. We did not open their official pages, so confirm their current roles and any programme recognition rules on their own sites.
WFME recognition applies to PAASCU as an agency. It does not tell you whether your school was accredited by PAASCU, or accredited in your graduation year. The Sponsor Note does. Ask your school for written confirmation of its accreditation history as well.
USMLE testing #
Since January 2026 IMGs register for the USMLE through FSMB, while ECFMG decides eligibility for ECFMG Certification (announcement). USMLE says Step 1 and Step 2 CK are offered at Prometric centers worldwide, and Step 3 only in the US and its territories.
Unofficial sources name Philippine cities, but we could not confirm any from usmle.org or Prometric and do not repeat them. After you get a permit, use the Prometric locator, compare several centers and dates, and read the test center guide. If no seat fits your window you may need to test in another country, which can involve a visa and testing region questions; see B-1/B-2 for exams.
Documents and credential verification #
ECFMG verifies your final diploma and transcript directly with the issuing school; copies sent by you do not replace that. Practical steps:
- Check the ECFMG Reference Guide for the exact diploma title for your school and graduation year.
- Match names and dates across diploma, transcript and passport. Name order and middle names are a common mismatch source across any country.
- Ask your school's registrar which office answers ECFMG and keep a log.
- See the EPIC and verification guide and common ECFMG delays.
We found no official ECFMG note specific to Philippine documents, and we could not confirm whether ECFMG asks for PRC licensure documents. Check the current Information Booklet.
The US visa process, in brief #
The usual route is an ECFMG-sponsored J-1 (Statement of Need, DS-2019, visa interview) or an employer-sponsored H-1B. See the J-1 process, J-1 versus H-1B and visa interview preparation.
Appointment waits at the US embassy in Manila change often and are published by the State Department; we do not quote them. This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm your case with the program's international office, ECFMG or an immigration attorney.
Community and professional resources #
The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) is the national professional body in the Philippines; read its About page for what it offers. Philippine physician groups also exist in the US, but we could not verify a national umbrella organization's current details, so we do not name one. ECFMG keeps a page of ethnic physician organizations that may list relevant groups. These groups offer networking only and cannot influence eligibility or placement.
What to do next #
- Check your school and graduation year in the World Directory.
- Contact your school's registrar about verification.
- Plan US clinical experience with the USCE guide and how to get USCE.
- Read the ECFMG certification overview.

Frequently asked questions
How many Filipino graduates match each year?
We found no official current figure. NRMP reports non-U.S. IMGs as one group and does not break out results by country of medical school.
Which bodies oversee Philippine medical education and licensure?
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) regulates higher education, including the Doctor of Medicine program, and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) handles professional licensure. PAASCU is a private accrediting association on the WFME recognized list.
Does PAASCU accreditation guarantee my school meets ECFMG's requirement?
No. WFME recognition applies to the agency. ECFMG applies the requirement by school and graduation year, shown in your school's ECFMG Sponsor Note.
Can I take Step 1 or Step 2 CK in the Philippines?
USMLE says these Steps are offered at Prometric centers worldwide. We could not verify the Philippine center list from an official page, so check the Prometric locator once you have a permit.
